When group of young students attend their first formalized class to learn an instrument, it’s wonderful to see how their eyes sparkle with excitement. You certainly know they envision themselves as possibly the next Mozart, or aspire to mimic the immense achievements of Katy Perry.

There are the nervous types of students who seem as meek as a mouse, almost too shy to even touch the instrument, let alone play anything remotely resembling a mere handful of notes. But give them something to learn, and they may blossom into the latest protege. Then there are the types of students that jump in and start slamming into their chosen musical device. Not giving the slightest concern for how loud or how long to hold a note, nor caring if the musical piece should be played gracefully or powerfully.

Whether its a violin, a flute, or a piano, they look so eager to learn as fast as they can. When they hold in their young hands the very instrument they will hopefully master in the future, you can just see them gleam with unending pride. They marvel at its shine, and grin at how smooth the instrument is. Perhaps they’ll even blow into it, with the hope of playing something that is bearable to hear. Or maybe they’ll press a key or strum a string to see what kinds of sounds they can make before the class has even started.

Youthful eagerness is the keyword when you feel the raw energy emanating throughout the room. The excitement to play as a class, to make music in an organized group fills them with anticipation. As they settle in and the teacher begins the lesson, everything grows quiet. They’re all ears, glued to every single word their teacher speaks.

They may struggle to learn musical theory, to learn how many beats a quarter note gets, or what are the letters of the notes for all those lines and spaces. And their initial awkwardness results in a cacophony of jumbled noise.

A wandering note played off key screeches at the teacher’s ears, or a bass clef may have been miscalculated in the number of beats it should have received. But all in all, forward progress is made with the expert and gentle guidance of the music teacher. Though the teacher does his or her best to smile and encouraging their young charges.

The most cherished thing for a music school is to see the progression of its students. Ever so slowly, chaotic noise gives way to a symphony in the making. Each lesson brings the students closer and closer to that ever elusive moment when group unity is finally reached. That is the exact time in a music school teacher’s life which makes all the hardship and toil worth it. They revel in this second of glory, they know their music students can only evolve for the better with diligent practice. The class is well on its way, it is simply a matter of time.

Very soon, the class will play together in unison. Harmony will result, and music will erupt. Finally.
